I am a proud Igorot lady. I admit that this was not the most well executed IIC in its history. However, the spirit of the IICs have remained constant, and IIC in London was no exception. The spirit and soul of its message was evidently visible and may it live on forever.

IIC4 relayed a message. And the message is this: We can’t look forward, until we look back. From the Youth perspective, I genuinely, wholeheartedly, agree with this. I feel the consultation managed to address key issues in principle, but only when actions are undertaken can we say, we attained success.  I believe IIC4 was a great success in terms of its programs.

As a 3rd generation Igorot, born and bred not in the grass roots of the Cordilleras, but here in London, this IIC for me, opened my eyes to bigger and better things. In April 2000, the youth “exposure” trip to the Cordillera opened my awareness to issues that needed to be addressed and the positive implication of culture that needs to be understood. This was our drive - to be able to identify these issues at an international level. I feel the IIC4 successfully addressed this. I, for one, wanted to learn more of the issues of land and understand more of the Igorot culture. I feel this topic was explored and it was interesting to hear of the responses on both sides of the coin.

There was never a dull moment throughout the consultation. In between the sessions were acquaintances with others, young and old alike. The innate culture of the Igorots sounded so loud and clear as each one greeted each other. The last minute acceptances of the panelists and speakers and the hospitality of the families in London, were truly touching. The heart of the Igorot was inimitable. From this IIC, I gained insights in many ways.

I was able to sit back and acknowledge my values at a third person’s perspective. These values are inherent for any Igorot youth. However, only from the workshop on “values and traditions” were these actually identifiable to me. I am proud. The inspirational talks and awesome performances/presentations instilled in us: unity, identity, and has posed challenges to every youth like me. I was able to identify values such as: the importance of Education, and making our families proud. The IIC enforced my drive to want to do better. One day, I want to sit up there on a panel and talk of my journey to get where they (the panelists) and numerous other Igorots are able to do today. It was beyond a doubt - inspirational.

I believe the IICs are blessings. Who would have thought there were so many globally competitive Igorots out there? Before 1995, I would have only known of my family circle. It seems unbelievable that there are people just like myself in the different corners of the world that share the same values, cultural upbringing, and also share the same wonder and amazement to learn more of this rich heritage. I felt an immense sense of warmth throughout the consultation. And it amazes me, the overwhelming family environment that was created.

We youths are the voice of tomorrow. As it was said: “This IIC planted the seeds.” Now, I feel it is up to us, the youth, with the help of the elders, to nurture them. I’ll say it again, with no reservations:  I am a proud Igorot lady.
